PowerPoint: Live Radio for African American Listeners

Earlier this year, we digitized 17 episodes of PowerPoint, “the first and only live program to focus attention on issues and information of concern to African American listeners using the popular interactive, call-in format.” These programs were discovered in the Corporation of Public Broadcasting records and digitized, now streaming in UMD Libraries’ Digital Collections.

PowerPoint was based in Atlanta and aired for seven years on NPR and Sirius satellite radio. Topics covered include civil rights, race in America, education, art, politics, international conflicts, as well as other issues affecting Black Americans. PowerPoint hosted guests with broad ranging perspectives and Black leaders including Angela Davis, Octavia Butler, James E. Clyburn, Ossie Davis, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr., Earl G. Graves and many others.
