Why use Hornbake Library?

We know that there is a lot of confusion about what goes on in Hornbake Library. We hear the tour groups walk by and ponder why there are so many libraries on campus and why anyone would visit anything other than McKeldin. Here’s why you should come to Hornbake!

Hornbake Library’s Special Collections provide access to unique primary source material (aka, stuff you cannot find anywhere else!) related to a variety of topics including the University, literature, our lovely state of Maryland, broadcasting history and much, much more.

So the next time your professor tells you to go back to the source of information for your project, come visit us. Our librarians are happy to sit down with you and assist you through your research process from crafting your question to showing you resources to help format your bibliography.

If you can’t reach us in person, we are also available by email. Speak immediately with a librarian using the Ask Us Now chat service, or find specific UMD librarians using the directory or via one of our subject guides.

In addition to the collections and people here, you can also find a lot of study space. We have spaces suitable for both individual (quiet) and group (loud) study.

We hope to see you soon!

Redesigned Website for Special Collections

Yesterday, Special Collections staff were excited to see the roll out of our redesigned website. We spent many months brainstorming about how to serve you better by improving our web-presence. We hope you find it easier to locate the information you want to find, and that you are discover other types of resources you never knew about. Our guiding principles were simplicity and exposure. We hope you see past any divisions between collections to all the possibilities within our collections.

As you use our new website, please send your comments, questions and ideas to lcleary@umd.edu. We anxiously await your input.
